This application employs a cellular automaton framework, referred to as the 'universe,' to generate intricate signals that lend themselves to precise control. These signals are utilized to modulate various parameters, including oscillator settings, saturation levels, filter configurations, and echo effects. The output from the 'universe' is associated with groups of 'populated' cells known as 'communes,' which serve as abstractions that interpret the collective state of connected cells as control signals.
The state of the 'universe' progresses through successive generations. Prior to each transition, individual cells count their eight neighboring cells that are 'populated' and evaluate user-defined rules to determine whether they will be 'populated' in the subsequent generation.
Multiple interpretative modes are available for deriving signal information from the 'communes.' For instance, in 'choir' mode, if all cells within a 'commune' are 'populated,' the resulting signal reaches its maximum; if half are 'populated,' the signal is at an average level; and if none are 'populated,' the signal is zero. In contrast, 'trigger' mode considers the presence of at least one 'populated' cell as indicating a maximum signal, with zero otherwise.
Modulation capabilities extend to parameters such as pitch, panorama, volume per oscillator, and additional elements like thermal voltage, emission coefficient, saturation current, and the mixing ratio of raw and processed signals for diode clipping. Control over drive, cutoff frequency, filter resonance, delay time, delay offset, feedback, and echo ratios further enhance modulation options.
Oscillators can be selected individually with customizable waveforms and initial phases. Users can designate oscillators in solo or mute modes and adjust pitch, panorama, and volume parameters independently.
The voice integration aggregates signals from multiple oscillators per note. It allows for setting note delay, duration, pitch variation, volume levels for the collective voices, and fine-tuning an overarching envelope for dynamic control.
The effects section includes a DC saturation module with configurable parameters such as thermal voltage, emission coefficient, saturation current level, and blend control for saturated versus original signals. It features a filter module where type, drive amount, cutoff frequency, and resonance settings can be adjusted. An additional echo effect provides controls over dry/wet mix, feedback amount, delay time, and channel-specific delay offsets.
The sequencer component simplifies melody creation and live performance management. It comprises five segments of 16 steps each, with functionalities for adding or disabling sounds and cloning elements. Every step connects to a keyboard supporting MPE input for both single notes and chords. Tempo settings can be managed via BPM adjustments or tap-tempo functions for synchronization.
The keyboard module enables note playback and editing within selected sequencer elements.
The MIDI-mapper interface links cellular automaton controls to MIDI targets by mapping interface elements to specific controller inputs or buttons.
Cellular is compatible with the AUv3 standard, facilitating integration with other compatible applications concurrently running on the device.
